(Item 1):
Nuneaton Evening Tribune - August 16th., 1979 - What was it?..An unidentified flying object was sighted by three people - one of them a policewoman - in the sky above North Warwickshire last night. The first “encounter” was reported by 14 year-old Marcus Barber who was sitting on a wall outside Fazeley Working Men’s Club at 11.10pm. Early this morning, at 2.10am, a night fisherman eight miles away at Sheepy Magna telephoned Atherstone police ”a bright light flashing backwards and forwards across the sky.” Atherstone policewoman Lesley Clarke went to the fishing spot at Sheepy Mill and confirmed it. She said it was travelling backwards and forwards across the sky with great speed. Marcus, who lives in Lichfield Street, Fazeley, told police at Tamworth: “I saw a very bright light about twice the size and brightness of a normal star - it was moving across the A5 from south to north - then it stopped and moved upwards very fast. It all happened in about 20 seconds.” (10).
(Item 2): Nuneaton Evening Tribune - March 7th., 1980 - Hinckley UFO investigation…
A 14-year-old Hinckley boy’s claim that he spotted a UFO over fields at Wykin is being investigated by the Leicestershire UFO Investigation Network, one of its spokesmen said today. He said that the boy saw a cross-shaped object with red and blue lights descend into a field - and then vanish. Object - The spokesman also said that the boy was only yards from the object when it came down. “He suffered complete loss of hearing during the encounter, and was said to be in a state of shock for some time afterwards” he said. The “sighting” happened while the boy was working part-time at a farm near Wykin village. “Other farm workers have confirmed the boy’s story”, added the spokesman. (51/79/51). (10).
(Item 3): Burton Daily Mail, April 10th., 1980 - Space rubbish lights sky…
A LIGHT, said to be almost as bright as the Sun, was seen throughout the North of England early today. In Manchester, 40 people telephoned the police saying they had seen flare flashes in the night sky. In Stockport, police, fire and ambulance men were called to a field where it was said an object had landed, but nothing was found. Air traffic controllers at Manchester Airport said that the whole sky was brilliantly lit up for a few seconds. People from North Wales to the Scottish border contacted the police. An airport spokesman said the most likely explanation was that an unusually large piece of space debris had re-entered the atmosphere causing the sky to flare up. (51/80/12). (36).
(Item 4): Nuneaton Evening Tribune - November 18th., 1980 - Nuneaton UFO sightings…
An Unidentified Flying Object buzzed houses in Nuneaton at the weekend. The UFO - described as a yellow ball of light - was seen in the sky at Hill Top and Whitestone around 7pm on Saturday. One eye-witness was Mrs. Nancy Howe of Hill Top. Who sighted the mysterious light above rooftops near her home. “It was very low above the houses”, said Mrs. Howe, who was walking home at the time of the sighting. “It seemed to be bobbing up and down - jerking as if it were in trouble, I rushed in home and got my husband and my son, and the three of us watched it for a while. We just didn’t know what to make of it. At one stage, it looked as if it might land - but then it flew off towards Coventry.” The UFO was also spotted by Tribune photographer Ted Cottrell who described it as a yellow ball with a red flashing light. Officials at Baginton said they had no knowledge of aircraft in the area at the time of the sightings. The UFO is now being checked out by the Nuneaton Aerial Phenomena Society. (77/80/36). (10).
(Item 5): Nuneaton Evening Tribune - April 2nd., 1981 - UFO could be meteorite…
An Unidentified Flying Object was spotted over the A5 near Nuneaton last night. Mr. Bill Whetstone of Castle Road, Weddington, reported seeing an unusual object in the sky at approximately 11 p.m. He described it as a bright, white light that crossed the A5 and then flew in the direction of Polesworth. Nuneaton police today said the object may have been a meteorite. (77/81/03). (10).
(Item 6): Leicester Mercury, August 5th., 1981 - Green UFO spotted in Earl Shilton…
An Earl Shilton housewife who claims to have spotted an unidentified flying object over the Barwell area last week, is wondering if others may have seen it too. Mrs. Potts, of Cedar Road, Earl Shilton, reported that as she was looking out of her bedroom window at about 11 p.m. last Thursday she saw a very bright green object travelling low over the Barwell area. Although the object was only in view a few seconds, Mrs. Potts said she could clearly see a bright yellow cone-shaped “tail” behind the object, which seemed to also contain some orange similar to flames from a rocket. Mrs. Potts added that the object wasn’t making any sound that she could hear although it did not seem all that far away. She said that the UFO finally vanished behind nearby trees. (51/77/81/A-200). (7).
(Item 7): Leicester Mercury, March 23rd., 1982 - County UFOs Prompt probe…
A countrywide research project is to be started to try to find what caused balls of light which have been seen recently in the sky over Leicestershire. After a report recently of a sighting near Desford, many other similar reports have been forwarded to the organisation UFO Research, Leicestershire. The bright white or green balls of light have also been seen over Coalville, Blackfordby and Burbage and are still a mystery. Mr. Mark Brown, one of the members of the research group, said that it may have been ball lightning when the first sightings took place but now another theory has been proposed.
“All the sightings tend to be close to mines or quarries and could have been caused by the piezo-electric effect which is caused when natural quartz in rock is affected by landslip and a discharge is sent into the atmosphere.” (7).(Item 8): Hinckley Times, September 30th., 1983 - A Previous UFO Sighting…
Sir-
I read your article in the Hinckley Times about Mr. Bowlsworth and the UFO. (Case 51/83/02, Ed.) - On the night of 17th., August 1981, I saw a similar sight roughly over the Common. I was very curious seeing this and told Mrs. Mayne of Hinckley Aerial Phenomena Investigations about it. She said there had been previous reports of such sightings over the Common area. (Briers, F.). (51/81/11). (8).(Item 9):
Hinckley Times, November 27th., 1987 - UFO Spotted Over Hollycroft…A large diamond-shaped UFO was claimed to have been spotted over the Hollycroft Estate by a John Cleveland College student last week. Fifteen year-old Ashley Chamberlain was watching television at his home in Bearsden Crescent, Hinckley, at about 8.40 p.m. on Wednesday 18th., when he heard a loud noise like a low flying aircraft outside. At first he went to the window and looked out, but as he could not see anything at all, he went outside to investigate.
“I saw a huge diamond-shaped object going across the road. It was about the size of a Jumbo Jet, and it was flying very low over the ground. It was all dark except for a red light at the top, and a red light at the bottom” said Ashley. “At first, I thought it was a low flying aircraft on its side with the wings pointing up and down, but when I looked more closely, I could see that it wasn’t that” he said. He was so frightened that he rushed back inside the house and rang his Mother who was at a friend’s house. He then called the Police, and told them what he had seen. “It took me a while to get through, but when I did, they said that they had heard something go over as well, and if they had any more reports they would investigate”. Ashley had never believed in UFOs before. “I never thought about it” he said. “I wasn’t go to tell anyone what I had seen and was just going to try to forget about it until I heard on Mercia Sound radio on Saturday that two Policemen and another man, had also reported seeing a UFO.” The reaction at Hinckley Police Station however, was a little more down to Earth. One of their officers had seen the object that night, according to P.c. Cuthbertson. He said: “It was just one of those low-flying aircraft that we regularly get round here.” (51/87/03).(8).(Item 10): Hinckley Herald & Post, October 8th., 1992 - Strange sightings…
THE HINCKLEY area is apparently a hotbed of UFO activity, an eminent researcher has revealed. Out of 35 unexplained phenomena in Leicestershire over the last 15 years, a third occurred in this area. Twelve sightings around Hinckley have included delta-shaped UFOs and a yellow circle of flying lights. But researcher John Spencer is not making the case for little green men in flying saucers,
“I don’t think that is the right explanation” he told the Herald And Post. Mr. Spencer has been in Leicestershire to promote his newly launched book “The Paranormal: A Modern Perspective”. From crop circles to premonitions, healing and dowsing to crystal energy and coincidence, Mr. Spencer suggests an explanation for such mysteries exists in nature and the nature of mankind. In Leicestershire between 1977 and 1991, there were 35 unexplained sightings. These included a delta-shaped UFO over Hinckley in August, 1977, and a yellow circle of flying lights above Earl Shilton on October 6, 1989. (13).
