Nuneaton group probes sightings

Logical explanations and reasons can be given for virtually every out-of-the-ordinary or seemingly inexplicable occurrence. For instance, unidentified flying objects can nearly always be dismissed as satellites, aircraft, weather balloons and the like. But not every time. Geoff Taylor of Attleborough and a handful of other UFO enthusiasts became intrigued by the few sightings which defy rational explanation and remain unidentified, so he formed the Nuneaton Aerial Phenomena Society with brother-in-law Alan Salisbury after spending a while with a similar investigative group in Hinckley. A fascination in the subject and an open mind are still the main “qualification” for members of the society as they hope and wait for the unusual. Their objectives are to fully investigate sightings using the most scientific and objective methods at their disposal. But as Geoff said: “We always hope for something interesting - but you can’t make things appear.” “We try to investigate every sighting reported to us. People from all walks of life ask for our help and often the reports from UFOs to religion to ghosts and the spirit world, perhaps they are connected - We examine their sightings as scientifically as possible no matter how fantastic they may be. What would be the use in scepticism or ridiculing them - that would be pointless.” he said. Geoff Taylor has never actually seen an unidentified flying object but research groups, which are being built up throughout the country, have some very interesting incidents on record. There have been a number of “flaps” in various places where people have reported seeing something strange or unusual. One of the biggest groups in the area at Leicester have a large membership and circulate an interesting newsletter. Many weird happenings have been documented in the book together with precise descriptions, diagrams and reliable witness accounts - many of them backed up by other witnesses. The local group has preserved its contact with the group at Hinckley and they combine their meetings every six weeks. Discussions, policies and the organisation of various events take place at these and expert speakers often address the combined societies. With its fairly limited membership, the Nuneaton group have to concentrate their efforts on picking up information and analysing it. Much of what comes in can be easily explained away but there is always the chance that once in a while no reason can be found for a particular incident. Geoff said: “I believe there is some sort of phenomenon going on. What it is I would not like to say, but maybe our group and others like us can find out more about the subject.”
