UFO lands at Bridgnorth
By Derek Samson
April 12th,. 1969. 18:30 Hours.
Bridgnorth, Shewsbury, Shropshire, UKThe incident that you are about to read took place in Bridgnorth, on a quiet Sunday afternoon, on April 12th., 1969. The only witness, a retired school mistress, who for many reasons wishes to remain anonymous, and will therefore be referred to as Mrs. ’X’.
The event
On Sunday, April 12th., 1969, at 6.30 p.m., an unknown vehicle and its occupants were encountered by Mrs X. Her usual evening with her pet corgi, turned out to be the most frightening episode of her life. ‘Stanley’ loved walks with his mistress, with his favourite sport being to fetch sticks and stones that were thrown for his amusement. Mrs. X had barely walked more than two hundred yards when the vehicle -or machine, was observed. This is why perhaps, the incident unnerved her so much…. Realising how close the unknown was to her house. The thrown stick went high over the hedge, and as ‘Stanley’ disappeared, she hid behind a convenient tree, hiding from him when he re-appeared. The stillness of the evening was broken by Stanley’s yelping as he tore through the narrow gap in the hedge, past Mrs. X, and the tree, with his short legs taking to the road as fast as he could go, until he vanished away out of sight, around a slight bend. Thinking that children, or a courting couple, had thrown something at Stanley, Mrs X barged through the narrow gap ready to confront with anger the person, or persons that had dared to hurt her only treasured friend. Mouth open…. Ready to voice her protest, Mrs. X found herself alone, - no-one was there! Then her anger was suddenly changed to one of mixed excitement and fear, a feeling that…. She cannot describe in its true sense. But, she states, she knew she was seeing something unusual, something that she should not be seeing. In this state of mind, and completely rooted to the spot, her vision was taken up by an object that resembled a large spinning top resting on legs, and three strange figures that were moving around the object. Mounting fear overcame Mrs. X, and as the thought ‘out of this World’ flashed through her mind, she turned and ran away from the scene as fast as she could. Confused, she felt herself opening the side door of her cottage, letting in also, ‘Stanley’, who must have been waiting for her in the doorway. In a very bewildered state of mind, Mrs. X made herself a cup of tea, and in fact drank three cups, all the time recalling what she had seen. Although residing in a block of four cottages, Mrs. X was unable to bring herself together to inform her neighbour of her experience. In fact, the episode played on her mind so much, that the very next day she packed a small case and caught a train with connections to London, whereby she stayed with friends in Croydon for four days. Her friends told Mrs X that it would be better for her if she returned, and told someone about her experience, and that to keep it locked up inside herself might harm her general health. Also, that someone may be able to put her mind at rest as to what it was she had witnessed. Returning home to Bridgenorth, Mrs. X remembered that the ‘Bridgenorth Journal’ had carried in its previous editions, several letters concerning UFOs seen over the area, and it was from one of these letters that she was able to contact myself. On reading Mrs. X’s letter, I immediately made arrangements to visit her during the forthcoming weekend.
The investigation
On a chilly, April Saturday afternoon, I drove a few miles outside of Bridgenorth, and eventually found Mrs. X’s cottage. Upon knocking on the door I was greeted by a very charming old lady who went out of her way to make me at home. By her actions and remarks, she was very capable, and soon we were discussing her unusual incident.
First of all, I roamed around Mrs. X’s garden while she filled in one of our official sighting questionnaires, which I left for her so as not to confuse her memory - my intention was for her statements to be as exact as possible as to what she had seen. After completing the form, Mrs. X herself suggested that we pay a visit to the area in question. She said that she was no longer troubled by the incident, as after thinking it over and over, as to what she had seen, she suddenly seemed to be given a clearer understanding, it was as if something was trying to put her mind at rest.
Mrs. X now firmly believes that she has seen the nature of God - that the beings she saw, were one of the many forms, that his servants take on. As we entered the incident area through the narrow gap in the hedge, Mrs. X stated that she now firmly believed that the thought ‘Out of this World’, that went through her mind as she watched the spectacle, was induced intentionally in her mind so as to put her at ease. She said that perhaps the visitors were trying to convey to her…. ‘We are from another World, do not be afraid’.
Site examination
Between the time of the incident, and the time of my visitation to the sighting area, fourteen days had passed, and so the possibility of discovering any reasonable ground traces, was somewhat reduced. However, twenty-five yards from the hedge gap stood an uneven group of trees of varying heights, before those trees, Mrs. X pointed out where the craft appeared to have stood. I searched the area and found no definite landing marks, although there were three small holes - these were in a triangular shape (see Figure 1.) with different distances between each hole, the distances being, three yards, four yards and five yards. If these marks had been made, as presumed, by some type of landing gear, then the vehicle using that gear must have been very light-weight in construction, or at least, semi-suspended in the air, for the depth of the holes (all three) measured around five inches, with their circumferences being about seven inches. It became difficult to ascertain exactly what shape the holes had originally been, but at the time of the investigation, their shape appeared to be round.
Soil tests
Samples of soil from the holes were taken away for tests, but nothing unusual was found in the contents, except that the region is high in lime deposits. After a more thorough investigation, I was convinced that an area several feet in diameter, in front of the three noted holes had been used - or trodden down. This area, even seemed devoid of the larger blades of grass and plant life, and when viewed from a few feet away, appeared as a small clearing.

Mrs. X stated that while she watched the spectacle, three figures were moving about in front of the ‘top’, bending down now and then, as if picking up objects from the ground. She knew that they were picking something up, and placing this unrecognisable object upon what looked like a large mirror which was situated beneath, or in front of the ‘top’ - shaped object on the ground. Mrs. X then stated that the ‘objects’, whatever they were, seemed to disappear. Could it be that this area had been subjected to some form of ray which utilised a method for taking samples. This speculation could perhaps provide a possible explanation for the ‘clearing’, that seemed to stand out from the rest of the surroundings. Once again, samples taken from this area failed to show anything other than the ordinary.
After collecting the soil samples in two plastic containers, Mrs. X and I returned to her cottage. I asked her certain extra questions regarding the ‘object’ and it’s crew. When asked what the people looked like, moving around the UFO, Mrs. X replied - ‘How do we know they are people’? To me, they like animated puppets. They were about the size of an average sized eleven year-old, but at the same time, they looked tall and thin. Regarding their attire, Mrs. X replied - ‘They didn’t seem to be wearing clothing as such, the entire figure was black, except for an oval white/silvery patch in the region of the waist, although this patch stood out, and did not appear to glow’. ‘The heads seemed to be rather pear-shaped, almost like the tops of the old petrol-pumps we used to have in this country’. When I asked the witness for additional detail she replied - ‘You must remember that I only saw them for about twenty seconds, not much time to remember too much detail, also, I was quite frightened too, but, as far as I can recall, they seemed to have hands but no fingers - but of course, I may be wrong. I seem to think that who, or whatever made these ‘beings‘, did so in order for them to be used for a specific purpose, like I have mentioned before - like servants, to do a special task. These were just like people or artists when they draw ‘imps’, except that they had no tails’.
The drawing below was made by myself , and was selected by the witness, as the nearest description to the shape of the figures. She said that during the time that she watched, she saw only three figures.
Fig. 2. Drawing, (by Investigator), shows the general appearance of the three members of the UFO’s ‘Crew’.
When questioned further about the craft, or ‘top’, as Mrs. X preferred to call it, she said that it wasn’t very large, about the size of two cars put on top of one another, (About ten feet high)! There did not appear to be any openings or doors etc. anywhere, it had legs, but the witness was not sure how many, it may have been three, she said. I asked her if the ‘top’ appeared to be resting upon the ground, but to this question, she wasn’t absolutely sure of the answer, but she said - ‘ I do distinctly remember the ‘haze’ or ‘shimmer’, that seemed to be around the ‘top’s upward rim, - it was like the heat haze you get when the weather is very hot, sometimes you see this some distance in front of you’.
Fig. 3.
Figure 3 above shows the object witnessed by Mrs. ‘X’, (drawn by investigator). Note the ‘shimmering effect’ described as affecting just the top half of the strange object.
By now, I had put away three cups of tea and two slices of home-made cake. I could also see that Mrs. X was getting a little tired, after all, this to her, was a hectic afternoon. So I told her that there was just one more item, that of the object’s colour? She said that it was a dirty-looking grey.
I left Mrs. X telling her that I would call on her again in say about six months time, just to see how she was getting on. During October when I visited her again, Mrs. X seemed to have taken on a new lease of life…. Even the dog looked different! I’m sure she knows something that I don’t…
